If Afghanistan did alright, the soviet union would put off its collapse for maybe a whole half decade, having plugged up a difficult money sink and reinforced confidence in the soviet system. Y'know, for a few years, before the duct tape stops holding together the cracks.
But once it falls, well, we're right back where we started, with the taliban eventually winning and someone, probably the states, going in to fight a nearly unwinnable insurgency.

When everyone had to choose a side it was on the backdrop of the western powers having colonies that were seen as illegitimate to the well-to-do arab nationalists and the soviet union willing to shell out some no-questions-asked cash to anyone who could say "national liberation". Who to align with was sort of a no-brainer regardless of whether one preferred markets or central planning.

You can go further and say ho chi minh would have probably made concessions towards a more market-oriented economy (and even preferential treatment for american investors) had the US done the right thing and chose vietnam over france.
But you're somewhat wrong about Hussein, insofar as the guy was basically at his lowest standing with his own government by the time of the 9/11 attacks and subsequent invasion.
The states could have simply said "the only head we want is Hussein's, we're fucking off as soon as we have that." Take away the existential part of an existential threat and folks weigh their options: stay in power but without Hussein, or die ignominiously to american bombs? Heck, might have even prevented a civil war doing that.
