Why don't politicians, especially western ones, wear anything fancy or recognizable anymore? Every politician has a gray/black suit with a red tie and shaved face. Was there a cultural shift or is it just a precedent that won't go away?

That's a really good question. I think democraty mean that they can't risk to be seen as an outcast that the people voting for them so they go for the safer fashion choices.

Because many modern states' nowadays are all about "muh egalitarianism" "muh humble beginnings" "muh one with the people."

Add "muh civilian control over the military."

In contrast, monarchs are all about how the dynasty is totally special n shiet. And generals are all about the military's power over the state. And theocrats are about how majestic the faith's servants are.

Blame the clothing companies that make suits, suits sell due to the association with power. At least the commies, nazis and fascists didn't use suits.

Because overt displays of wealth are considered corny and unnecessary.

The idealized modern ruler is a serious businessman rather than a king born into wealth.

But it does not have to be corny or unnecessary. I can't believe I'm saying this, but look at Hitler. He does not have crazy designs and jewels everywhere. He had a nice light brown suit and tie with a symbol of his country.

He's in a military uniform. An overt display of power.

I think in democratic context you want to look as plain as possible to not upset the pawns

Absolutely nobody gives a shit about high fashion or whatever it is called. It's on the same level as shitting on canvas and is appreciated by the same kind of people.
>>
>>3128799
Today's leaders don't want to seem like military, though.

It's just modern fashions. Nowadays the trendy thing is all neutrals. Black, grey, navy for formal ones and brown, cream, and khaki for casual events.

In the 60's politicians could wear brighter blue suits or even a burgundy suit for business meetings or political events.

Because the western world dominates the world, and the western world was been progressively taken over by a Culture of Merchants. After centuries of slow conquest, this Culture of Merchants rules victorious today since the world hegemon is the USA ie a natiom that didn't adopt the Culture of Merchants but was born from it.

The Culture of Merchants is related to liberalism and capitalism, but it's not any of those. Communism or socialism are product of the Culture of Merchants too. Different fascist (or near-fascist) rulers pretended to be a third way but actually failed to properly fight the Culture of Merchants or eventually embraced it.

The Culture of Merchants is based around ideas of monetary pseudo-meritocracy. Those include a certain equality and respect for others, at least those others who are your peers. Unlike in the cultures of warriors and kings you have to pretend to have worked your way up, you need to be a fellow businessman (or banker, or actor, or football player). So you have to be subtle when showing your higher position.

Because they're civilians and not nobility. The politicians try to show upstanding citizenship manners.

TL;DR to appease the corporate overlords

And when did politicians wear personalised clothing anyway? There's always been some consensus on elegant clothing.
