Anyone know why the google search popularity seems to go through this biannual cycle? Each year, the search popularity peaks around May and early December, and declines sharply around Christmas. Does this possibly have anything to do with election schedules?

"Potato" peaks every November, the harvest for them is long before November so it probably has something to do with Thanksgiving.
In April 2006 the word "Satan" peaked to double its average searches and never reached even close to that again.

That's a good point I didn't consider. Not a very exciting one, but probably the most likely.
"4chan" peaked in September of 2014 because of "the fappening"
It quadrupled in the number of searches
