Segregation conflicted with Revolutionary war and Enlightenment ideals at a time when there was a threatening outside power enforcing a strict ideological adherence to the Democratic doctrine. It would most likely have continued without external pressure, as it had after every war in which blacks fought, after every other murder/lynching of an innocent black man, after every other little injustice to even the most respectable black people.
