That's not really how it went down. He did try other methods to try and make Nobunaga act more reasonably but as we know from history, Nobunaga was a nutcase with a severe case of eccentricity.

When nothing else would work, only one option remained. He'd give his life so the Oda wouldn't go to shit with this kid running it.

And it worked. Nobunaga took the lesson to heart and began the conquest that nearly unified Japan, and then when Mitsuhide went maximum retard, got it completely unified by Hideyoshi following him.

Then Tokugawa fucked it all up by doing the opposite of what Nobunaga and Hideyoshi wanted but eh. Point is, years more of catastrophe would've continued if not for that sacrifice. The plan worked.
