Without looking to closely at it, I would reckon that Haiti is isolated enough that there wasn't any way to quickly bring in reinforcements to suppress the rebellion. There is also the matter of the comparatively high ratio of slaves versus a smaller number of white people.

This is in contrast to slave rebellions in the US where the army could respond quickly, and there were enough white people around that blacks were always outnumbered no matter where they were.

It largely succeeded because it wasn't just a matter of slaves vs masters. It got tied up in the politics of the French Revolution, and later the Napoleonic Wars. This meant that the French were also fighting each other and foreign powers intervened. It was much bigger and more complicated than a simple slave revolt.

1. France was literally in a state of collapse and revolutionary upheaval
2. The climate and terrain made it perfect for fighting a guerilla war against Europeans. (which is why 30,000 battle hardened veterans got smashed and had to retreat by slave militas as disease (like yellow fever) cut down 50%+ of their numbers)
3.The whites in Haiti were very few in number and extremely divided along economic lines.
4.Spain and the UK supported the destabalisation of French authority by supplying arms and allowing smuggling.
5. The value of sugar declined to the point where it wasnt worth the huge cost of taking the island back by force.
6. The rebellious sentiment failed to spread to other slave states hence there was no political reason to crush it.

Most came from the same region, continued martial, religious and political institutions in Haiti and that was critical in group cohesion.

Haiti had to constantly bring in more and more Fon people since most died after 7-10 years
