The Irish as a whole are descendants of English/British settlers. Their first language is English. Their greatest historical figures, in literature, science, even fucking Republicanism, are 'Anglo-Irish'. At no point in history has the Irish island been a single, independent entity, whilst it has had English/British rule - in whole or in part - for a third of its 'Celtic' history (they arrived in 500 BC).

The Irish are ethnically and religiously homogenous for the most part. That means the brits can't pit them against each other and it makes for a more unified Irish resistance. Compare this to India, one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse places on the planet. Between the hundreds of ethnicities, different reilgions, caste system and so on, it's pretty easy to play them against each other. That's what made the independence movement by Ghandi so successful. He, Hindu leaders and Muslim leaders managed to put their diffferences aside to a great degree to raise an effective resistance.
