The continued resistance of the West, particularly western Europe, to Soviet influence, was the true reason why the USSR collapsed.
The USA was a part of that insofar as they bankrolled and encouraged that resistance, and backed it up with military spending.
But the USA went way beyond what was necessary, particularly in the Vietnam War and under Nixon's and Reagan's presidencies in Latin America. That did not encourage the USSR to collapse; if anything, it encouraged the Vietnamese and a significant portion of Latin America to deeply resent the USA.
This would have strengthened the Soviet bloc if it hadn't been for the fact that it was collapsing internally as a result of it never being able to expand significantly past 1956.

Some military spending was very effective, mainly in Afghanistan and Eastern Europe.

Adolf once said of the Soviet Union "kick the door in and the whole rotten structure will come crashing down". In a way he was right, his mistake was assuming that damaging the Soviet Union's economy and military would cause political collapse, in reality the elite were still afloat like a toy ship in a bathtub that has been drained a little and the blame was firmly placed on psychopathic fascists trying to genocide everybody which only made the soviet hardliners more of an asset.

In Afghanistan the opposite happened, they sent 19 year old boys to die in a pointless belligerent unnecessary war in which freedom fighters were being handed the latest technology by the US and blowing up expensive choppers and APCs full of commandos. This combined with economic problems and the cost of upkeeping their puppets and allies around the world made the hardliners look like an incompetent liability.
