Why was the British Empire so exploitative and incompetent? Every one of their colonies became more successful after achieving independence.
I don't know why spain and portugal get all the derisive comments about being "exploitative" when britain was just as bad.

Despite their "retarded socialist economic models", after stagnating for a century under the benign neglect of the Raj, the GDP quickly rose immediately after independence and apparently soared when they reformed the economy.
Of course the initial post-independence rise may have had a lot to do with the Green Revolution.
