So how did this work? Were the other countries nominally independent and took orders from the Kremlin, or was it an almost super state that had members from each country as part of the Communist Party in Moscow? Was Russia the only part of the Soviet Union, or were countries like Poland and East Germany part of it as well? Or were they just client states that got told what to do?

The other countries were not independent and moscow was legally and politically above them in the hierarchy.

Poland and East germany were legally independent but politically Russia's bitches.
>>
The Communist Parties of the 15 SSRs had about equal power to Autonomous Republics within the RSFSR, just with more rights (i.e. succession) written into their constitutions.
>>

So there was no Lithuania or Estonia seats at the UN and shit like that?
>>
>>3083703
There were not. Lithuania, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan etc etc all joined the UN after the breakup of the USSR, shortly after they received international recognition as independent states.

yes
>or was it an almost super state that had members from each country as part of the Communist Party in Moscow?
yes
Why on earth do you think these things are somehow exclusive? This is literally how EU works today.
>>
>>3083703
No, but Belarus and Ukraine had their own seats.

East Germany and Poland were basically buffer states and they were independent though heavily aligned with the SU. Those other countries in the SU were basically states but they took orders from Moscow. It was literally a Union of Soviet republics.
>>

They were """"independent"""".

>>3084414
Stupid comparison. Soviet tanks rolled in Czechoslovakia when they thought they can make their own version of socialism. EU countries are much more independent.
>>
>>3084463
Poland and Germany, same as Hungary and Czechoslovakia were independent - until they decided to independently do some things the Ruskies did no approve of.

Then the tanks came in to make them independent again.

See:
DDR 1953
Poland 1956
Hungary 1956
Czechoslovakia 1968
Poland 1981

And then see it all tumble in 1989

See also: Yugoslavia, the one that got away, and Stalin fully intended to invade at one point.

Because Moscow housed Soviet of the Union and the Soviet of Nationalities, the two chambers of the Supreme Soviet, both of which had reps from all republics and territories, the latter actually in equal measure proportional to RSFSR itself, that is 32 reps for each Soviet republic, 11 for smaller autonomous subjects, etc.
Each republic had its own domestic Soviet parliament, that passed its own legislation (which could not violate the USSR Constitution), but they all had to toe the line in the face of the federal government, much like in United States.
>>
>>3084498
>Soviet parliament
Only Politburo and the Central Committee mattered.
>>
>>3084498
You seem to be ignoring the fact that Soviet "parliaments" (or higher Soviets) were in no way democratically elected, but rather the vote was on a shortlist of pre-sorted candidates from a single list - that of the Communist party.

As such, it is patently absurd to compare the resulting Supreme Soviet with the House and Senate of the United States.
>>
>>3084512
Those were both populated by reps from all republics.

>>3084515
>You seem to be ignoring the fact that Soviet "parliaments" (or higher Soviets) were in no way democratically elected

You think those MP's fell from the sky or grew on trees?
People started in local worker assemblies and worked their way up - elected by people around them. That's how it worked.
Autistic screeching about single party doesn't change anything.
>>
>>3084525
More or less.

It was not really a secret that you either had to tow the party line by the letter, or be an imbecile sent to represent "the workers" or "the farmers" - so they frequently sent milkmaids and mechanics to the Supreme Soviet for propaganda purposes.

No autistic screeching here, friendo. Just the facts.
