I want to get into Roman history.
Where should I start? Recommended reads?
start with Caesar first
then you have an easier time moving backward or forward

Get Caesar by Adrian Goldsworthy, It's great and explains the political institutions. You can get Caesars writings about his campaigns online for free. Then read up on all the empire stuff.

Historia Civilis on youtube has great stuff.

The history of Rome podcast by Mike Duncan
>>3072053
"daily life in ancient rome" - jerome carcopino
it's a good light starter book

First Punic War

Stay away from "Decline and Fall..." by Gibbon until you're really sure you're into it. It's a tough read, not for the faint of heart.

just sayin' it's not for the casual romaboo. Book's? "I, Claudius" if you'd try historical fiction. Look for some used textbooks concerning Roman history, art, or politics or something. Those neat illustrated books about ancient warfare are cool, too. Laugh all you guys want, but OP might want to check out vidya by Slytherine or Paradox.
Spartacus for 100% historical accuracy
Fate/Grand order for 1000% historical accuracy

"SPQR" by Mary Beard is pretty good as a general text on Roman life.
However, there is so much material to cover on Roman history (~1200 years from foundation to 476) that I would recommend just reading/skimming a few wikipedia articles to try and figure out what period you're interested in, and then look for more academic books on that time period.
Culture or military?
Military Adrian Goldworthy is good and Osprey has a good publication covering Rome's military throughout their history.
The initial wars with Estruscans and the unification of Italy are probably the best place to start militarily

Gibbon is the Sigmund Freud of Decline and fall of Rome narratives
everyone of his peers debunked him but he's so controversial and popular they have to pay attention to him anyway.

Also amazing prose and quality Enlightenment political philosophy even if he is projecting his ideas onto history.
It truly is a master work despite its flaws

Goldsworthy is quite good explaining all the politicking too.
