Why didn't Greeks call their Empire "Roman Empire" instead of "Byzantine Empire"? I thought they larped as Romans
>>3064559
They literally did that. "Byzantine" is a word we use now to keep people from confusing it with the WRE.
They did, in fact pretty much everyone called them some variant of the word "Roman". The term "Byzantine Empire" wasn't first used until a century after its fall.
>>3064559
They did. Byzantine is an historiographical term first and foremost.

The town of Byzantium is what formed the foundation of Constantinople and already predated the ****Roman**** city founded by Constantine by centuries.

Yes, and that why modern historians decided to call them Byzantines instead of Potatoes.
Still, Byzantium was an irrelevant footnote on history.
