It does not, and never did, exist. Nobody lied about it, it was simply miscommunication that evolved over time into a grand myth.

Well, South American societies did have a ton of gold, and other precious metals, and also had huge, pretty cities. But why would anyone bother to make an entire city out of gold? It'd be easily damaged and super hard compared to stone and wood. In the end, the actual cities the conquistadors discovered (before they ruined them) were far more impressive than El Dorado could have been realistically.
Although, there is a mountain made up of a whole heckin lot of silver, which is kinda similar. Cerro De potosi.
