Dont know if this is the right place to ask but whatever
If any of you know Latin can you please enlighten me how city names like Iuvavum and words like parvus were written and pronounced if in classical latin u and v made the exact same sound?
>>3058799
Also, did classical latin have absolutely no "v" sound?
>>3058808
It's a "weh/wuh" sound
>>3058814
No i meant did absolutely no word have any sound that sounded like v does in english
>>3058814
weh/wuh/kangz
>>3058799
I have a similar question. Is it true that in Latin, the letter 'c' was always pronounced with the 'k' sound?
>>3058863
As far as i know yes
Latin writing, English Pronounciation, Latin pronouncation
Vini vidi vici, veenee veedee veechee ,wini widi wiki
Iulius Caesar, Julius Ceesar, Iulius kaisar

u and v didn't make the same sound in Latin, they were the same letter. in consonantal positions it made a w sound.
loowawoom
parwoos
>>3058880
Thanks a lot for the answer, when classical latin comes up people usually bullshit about u-v, c-k and i-j but never actually elaborate anything so its good to know
>>3058814
I always imagined it more like the Japanese W instead of how W is usually pronounced in English. Like a sound between w and v.
>>3058880
>loowawoom
>parwoos
This is wrong though. The consonants are correct, but Latin did have long and short vowels.
It could be Lowawom, but Parwoos, or it could be Lowawoom, and Parwos.
There are several variations that are possible.

The masculine and neuter nominative singular endings -us and -um were always short.
>>3058915
So wait, V can mean o as well?
If not your post is extremely confusing
Are you trying to show long oo sound vs short oo sound?
>>3059101
>Are you trying to show long oo sound vs short oo sound?
Yes?
There's a difference between long and short vowels.
It's literally the difference between saying asshole(Ánus) and year(annus).
>>3059125
Yeah ok I understand short and long sounds but showing the short oo sounds as just o is extremely confusing
use ŭ and ū
>>3059125
anus means old woman in latin, by the way.
>>3059177
Yes it does, but I didn't write anus. I wrote Ánus, e.g long vowel A.
