how realistic was this depiction of a battle between Roman legions and germanics?
Not accurate in the least. Tactics, equipment, all wrong. It looked great which honestly is all that should matter in a movie.

Was there any emperor retarded enough to entertain the idea of returning Rome to a republic?

Probably they all entertained it at one point or another. Most likely just before they were assassinated

During the period of the five good emperors, the senate enjoyed a brief return to relevance.
While the republic never had a chance of being restored.
I think it would have been pretty likely that the senate would have morphed into an imperial diet somewhat analogous to Meiji Japan, had Romes good run of emperors continued for several more decades.

>IHR SEID VERFLUCHTE HUNDE
Just a second after the two armies clashed you could see roman legionaries fighting everywhere on the battlefield scattered and divided and that is enough to say it was not a good fighting scene
