Why 13th/14th century Artists were obsessed about drawing knights fighting snails?
Some kind of forgotten medieval meme?
Symbol for gluttony.
The first meme. Some artist may have done it to represent a royal house he didn't like or maybe he did it just because snails were the most pathetic creature he could think of and thus thought it was funny to draw a knight fighting one. Either way, other artists started doing it themselves just because he did it and the rest is history.
removing pests like snails was a common task for children and they might be invited to collect snails from a garden in exchange for keeping them (as food)
snail shells are like armor
Some say it's because the copying monks who grew lettuces and cabbage in their monasteries loathed snakes

>snakes
Just watched a BBC documentary on reptilians, i meant snails obviously
Medieval people were enthused by drawing parallels between human societies and nature, so a snail may represent a knight in nature, since it's "armoured."
The Snail has his shield and his arms, his antennae, so he's fighting the knight

25% Meme, 25% easy to draw (the snail at least), 25% snails are annoying an gross and destroying them is good, 25% symbolism (valiant knight vs slothful and gluttonous snail)
Why would yo udraw snails with humans mounted on the creatures?

Cuz it's fucking cool dude
>>3055698
Would this be just as cool in late medieval times as it is now?

how difficult is it to store books where snails can't get them

Nobody today knows for sure, but it does show up a lot. It was even parodied later in the middle ages.

The punchline is too simple or otherwise obvious

You're getting your captchas based on your search and posting history. Yesterday I literally got a name of a street on captcha like 10 minutes after I googled it.

What, I search the most obscene stuff (not to imply pornography but still) and yet I go with all the trends here of 'why does captcha want me to look at women's shorts all of a sudden' 'why are street signs not kid enough for captcha anymore'
