So, how prevalent were war elephants in the ranks of Hannibal's forces? Sources for the battle of Zama show that there were 80, but is this number accurate, or even feasible? More modern sources paint the War Elephants as drains on Hannibal's resources and moral, as he only crossed the alps with one, Surus, or Cyrus.

We don't know for sure, but a lot of modern historians agree they were probably not very useful. And probably weren't more than 30 or so. Less so when a bunch of them drowned crossing that one river.

Many other armies put elephants to good use, such as Maurya India, but I doubt elephants are well suited for European winters.
