If Confucianism said to not risk unnecessary foreign wars into non-Xia territories, why did the Han dynasty expand into xinjiang?
Because the king rules over All Under Heaven, get with the program.

Wouldn't annexing a huge swath of territory that borders the xiongnu increase chances of conflict?

You still don't get it? The purpose to annex this area is exactly to contain and defeat Xiongnu.

That doesn't make much sense to me. It's just a bunch of new borderland to defend. Most other empires (like the Roman Empire and the province of Dacia) would give up on such a massive extension

Because obviously you still lack of basic knowledge of Han dynasty history. They're not just a bunch of new borderlands. You need to study more if you're really curious about it.

Most other empires would also fail. Much of that expansion involved building up massive coalitions of buffer states to slow the nomads advance and protect trade routes, like breakwaters guard against the tides. It's also ironic that you would mention the Romans giving up, since due to their failure to maintain a proper tributary system in the Arab borderlands, they got steamrolled by the Islamic invasion.
Question to you Chink historians: Did people actually follow the confucianism logic of Leader-follower? As in:
Father - Son
Mother - Daughter
Elder Brother - Younger Brother
Friend 1 - Friend 2
Or was it just something Confucius dreamed of having?
