Why didn't the USSR ever make it to the moon? The Apollo missions took place in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The Soviet Union didn't collapse until 1991. They had plenty of time to organize their own moon landings. Furthermore, given that they seemed to have an advantage during the early parts of the Space Race, you'd think they would have been able to put something together. Instead, it seems they just gave up, allowing capitalism and democracy to dominate the Earth and the Moon.

They only went to the Moon to check up on what we were doing. When we lost interest so did they due to high costs and little return.
Either that or the Aliens kicked us both off.

Their rocket program was dogged by politicking and backstabbing which became worse and worse as the space race accelerated and the rocket program became more important and prestigious, causing them to bleed away their head start. Sergei Korolev, the actually competent rocket scientist who was the main guy responsible for them putting a man in orbit, ended up in the gulag because of some typical sniveling soviet cunt guy who wanted to advance politically by taking his place. He ended up cleared, but said sniveling guy ended up being the head of the soviet rocket engine design bureau, and from then on Korolev was stuck with just adding more tiny crappy rocket engines to his rockets instead of having better more modern ones developed like the americans were doing, because not only did he unsurprisingly despise the guy who had him put in the gulag, that guy was also utterly incompetent, as expected of a soviet ladder climber.
Then as the cherry on top, Korolev died halfway through developing the N1 rocket, which was the culmination of the complete mismanagement of the soviet space program, and the soviets rightly shitcanned it when it became clear that the Americans were actually making real progress in the Apollo program and were actually going to do that.

Good summary. Korolev got thrown under the bus about a dozen times, it's a damn shame what happened to him...
He was also one of the few, if only, people in the Soviet space program who actually wanted to go to the moon. Everyone else pretty much dismissed that, claiming that Sputnik and Gragarin were good enough propoganda pieces. There was no cultural desire to see the moon like there was in America.
