Historically, Ba'athism emerged out of the communist left to battle the monarchical right, and every single Ba'athist government (including Saddam's Iraq!) was profoundly connected to the cause of proletarian internationalism. Iraq is Shi'ite MAJORITY. Saddam was a sunni. Assads are a Shi'ite subgroup.
