Hess did try to kill himself while in Britain, he dressed up in his flying gear and jumped over the floor bannister of the country house he was locked up in. He broke an arm or something. As for his flight it was a shock to everyone, Hess never settled past his revolutionary street fighting days and was not suited for the internal competition of state politics, it was Hitler who pushed him to the forefront and by the time he left he had mostly faded into the background with Borman already fufilling most of his task as personal secretary
