Is there any truth to the meme that desegregation destroyed black owned businesses?
Of course, many blacks were against desegregation, Malcolm X was a segregationist.
Think about it, OP. You're a black dude. You pay double prices at the one black store you're allowed to go to because the owner knows you can't go anywhere else. Suddenly, 1964 happens and you can go to any store in town, like the six white owned stores that have to compete with each other for business. Fuck Mr. Johnson and his wilted, cut rate produce, and you'll be DAMNED if you're forced to eat another oxtail at steak prices. You're taking your black ass to a white store! Everybody and your cousins have the same idea, and a decade or two later, the black business corridor once present in every major city and good sized town is a hollowed out shell of its former self.

>have a government enforced corner on the market
>that protection goes away and you now have to compete with larger and possibly more financially endowed competitors alongside dealing with prejudice from a segment of your possible customer base
Yeah clearly it had no effect whatsoever. Sometimes you have to break a few eggs though.
Yeah, segregation created monopolies. After segregation whitey with their superior with their more professional businesses would outcompete black businesses. Basic econ

i grew up in the South. Which is littered in small towns with failed downtowns that used to be black business districts.
