can someone explain what exactly this is? I've heard of it in relation to marxist thought and gender studies, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. wikipedia doesn't clarify much and just says it is "a school of thought that stresses the reflective assessment and critique of society and culture by applying knowledge from the social sciences and the humanities". that's pretty damn broad.

It means that it's a philosophy that is "critical"(haha get it?) and rejects traditional values and narratives and uses "social sciences and humanities" to support their arguments. For example, they posit that "gender is a social construct" and cite social and humanitarian studies bullshit to support their argument against biological studies and years of hard science research. It is a reaction against logical positivism and inflexible Anglo rationalism which was viewed as a product of capitalism imposed on society.
