Because history is complicated and you need to back up your ideas with facts and sources. It's much easier to make up some shit and then handwave away criticism by claiming a massive conspiracy destroyed or altered all your evidence.

Because nobody but people who are interested in African history knows much about things like the Nigerian city-states and kingdoms, the Kongo kingdom, etc.
