For a while brazil had its own language too, which was heavily influenced by some tupi-family language. Like, pretty much most of the vocabulary. But eventually that became a barrier for traders and nobility going from portugal there, so the portuguese king at the time outlawed it. It was called Brasilica language, or sao paulo general language, something like that. I think modern nhengatu is related to it. Outlawed in the XVII if memory serves me

Actually the modern dutch language was created in the 18th century, and to the dutch is known as Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands, or General Civilized Dutch. Before this people would just speak their regional dialects. People still speak their regional dialects, but use ABN for city slickers and people from different provinces.

Dutch used to be one of the official languages pf South-Africa. However, during the British rule and after the Apartheid Dutch as an official language was abolished in South-Africa. It was strictly forbidden to speak Dutch instead of Afrikaans.

Go a little further and you can still understand them quite well. But travel from Bremen to Zürich and it's like they're speaking a completely different language altogether. Here in Germany, most regional languages are all but extinct, only continuing their existence in sideshows on TV as regional stereotypes. Especially Low German is dead as shit. From what I hear, it is actually still kicking around in your northern provinces. Groningen, Friesland and Overijssel I think.
