You have to work for that food as well, probably more time on average. Mental labour is often more tiring than manual. It drains your soul and will to live if you have to sit next to a computer screen for hours without barely any human interaction. Education is also a pain - especially in countries like Japan or some european ones. I much rather enjoy trimming the hedge or digging in a garden for 4 hours than memorizing some pointless nonsense word-by-word for the same amount of time.

I'm a german and from my grandparents and grand grandparents I know that it was different even 100 years ago. I also see the difference if I travel from the land to the cities. The development of the land is way slower. This let's you see back into the past a little bit. People on the land know their neighbours, their town, hundreds or thousand people. When I moved to some bigger cities I didn't know anyone. I am living in a major city now for 3 years, I know maybe 5 people from my university, but nobody where I am living. You don't have a sense of belonging, especially when you are not a full german (and right now there are a lot of half spanish, italian, vietnamese, turkish, greek etc. people here). I live in a city and communities are not unknown. I run into people I know all the time and this city has 800,000-1 million people. Theres neighborhood events and subcultural gatherings all the time. I chat with the baker down the street, see my neighbors in the train station, even know some of the priests here and I'm not even christian. Normally in a city you'll find a bunch of communities.
