Why did anti-commie propaganda work in South Korea but not South Vietnam?
>>
The South Korean government was set up by the Japanese, the South Vietnamese government was set up by the French.

The Japanese may not be very nice people, but they do happen to be pretty good at ruthlessly crushing dissent.

Also Diem was a catholic who hated buddhists in a majority buddhist country.
Also he was sort of incompetent.

I want Karen Kujo to bear my children!

The goals of Vietnamese communists weren't that set on ideology itself as much as on national liberation against foreign oppressors.

I mean they fought Chinese with the same fervour they fought French or Americans.

Koreans are way more susceptible to peer pressure. They're obsessed with fitting into social trends. They're like extraterrestrial aliens to be honest, especially if you come from a country that values individuality and personal freedom.

South Vietnam was more enamored with Ho Chi Minh, not communism.

While that's true, it's incomplete. Diem was also fantastically incompetent.

it did work, 2 million "boat people" fled south Vietnam

the difference was Korea is a peninsula with a temperate climate and it was easy to create a ww2 style line across it whereas the US couldn't shut down the Ho Chi Minh trail and cut off guerrillas and terrorists from resupply

note: it is impossible to have a realistic view of the vietnam war if you only view the communists in a positive light, if someone threatens to kill your family unless you supply them with rice you will do it regardless of your opinions, it is a cheap way to gain resources and the vietcong did this routinely

Propaganda never does anything except convince the people you rule to like you, or get a minority of some other people to support you instead of their own government. Propaganda alone has never suppressed any kind of insurrectionist movement, especially in a situation like Asian communism where millions of poor and desperate people are willing to give their lives for the economic liberation of their relatives and neighbors. Radicalism can't be quashed with brainwashing, but carrot and stick methods of keeping people in line.

South Korea was absolutely devastated after WW2 due to US/UN bombing campaigns. More tonnage was dropped on the Korean peninsula between 1950 and '53 than *in the entire Pacific* during WW2. The Korean provisional government at this time, formed by the US, was radically anticommunist. Tens of thousands of suspected leftists were murdered along with their families. Just before North Korea invaded the South in 1950, a communist uprising against US occupation led to 15-30,000 people being killed on Jeju island, whose entire population was less than 300,000.

First president Rhee Syngman ruled with an iron fist and prohibited all labor organizing, socialist rhetoric, and political dissent. Before being violently removed from power, he had executed over 200,000 political opponents. His successor Park Chung-Hee was also exceptionally violent by our western liberal standards but not so much as Rhee. More importantly, President Park was an adept economic planner who organized the Chaebol system which developed the South Korean economy under capitalism terms. While South Korea initially lagged behind the north in quality of life, this changed this radically.

Unlike his predecessor or the incompetent Frenchaboos that led South Vietnam before and during the war, President Park neutralized the communist movement by allowing capitalism to help rather than simply exploit the Korean people.

Kek there weren't many leftists left alive by 1961

1961-1990 Korea were like feudal society-tier social conservatism + unrestrained state capitalism. Probably the most right-wing a nation can get.

Well no, there's a Korean radical streak that exists to this day but it's mostly expressed through anti-imperialism and pacifism rather than actual socialism. That said, South Korea has a far more active socialist movement than any Western country. Even though its people broadly benefit from capitalism, it has a wealth disparity and abject poverty not expected of such a developed country. Constitutional blocks also allow parliament to outlaw certain parties, which led to the prohibition of the United Progressive Party in 2011.

I like to joke that South Korea is a third world country pretending to be first world, because despite their $20k+ per capita income, Korea has the economic and political trappings of a far poorer country. Because Korea was an authoritarian police state until, like, the early 90s, "200,000 executed by Rhee Syngman" is much more than a statistic. Lots of Korean politicians witnessed their parents be tortured or killed by the parents of other politicians. It's easy to see why the election of Park Chung-Hee's daughter provoked such outrage.

The presence of North Korea obviously muddles things, too. Despite what you might expect, South Koreans view their northern neighbors far more positively than we do, despite the West being in far less direct threat from North Korea. In South Korea, the left regards people from the North as fellow victims of American imperialism, even if they oppose many actions by the North Korean government. Centrist liberals don't go that far, but recognize that another war in the Korean peninsula would devastate South Korea as well. While the Korean right usually cosigns the mainstream Western belief that North Korea should be confronted and punished, ethnonationalists among the conservative parties see North Koreans as their ethnic brethren whose lives must be protected. Nobody really shares the "let's just bomb them" attitude we see among some American politicians.
