Did the South try to invade the North or did they just want independence?

there is a reason it is called "the war of northern aggression".

They invaded for military purposes (look at the Gettysburg campaign), but they had no interest in adding non-slave states to the CSA.

The CSA's goal was independence. However, this doesn't mean they didn't act offensively.

They attack Fort Sumter which was occupied by the Union (though it could be debated who's land it was since it was off the coast of South Carolina). The CSA had two response options: look weak/illegitimate and continue to let the US chill out just off the coast, or, give them the boot and eliminate a possible threat to their security but at the same time risk war and being labeled as the aggressors.

There were some battles fought in territory which was indisputably Union, but again this was not to acquire land. For example, in the fall of 62 CSA farmers needed time to harvest their crops so Lee marched for Pennsylvania (he didn't want to hurt Maryland since it was a split state). His idea was to live off of Union crops, lower Union moral, and convince European powers that the south was worth supporting. Of course, this didn't exactly go the way he planned and they had to retreat after Antietam/Sharpsburg. He tried it again for the same reasons in 63 but then Gettysburg.

TL;DR They wanted be left alone but the US wasn't having it so sometimes they tried to invade them right back because life sucks when all the fighting is in your backyard.
