Other way around I believe, the separatist movement in Turkestan probably dates back to the Qing contest, they tried to dissolve the Uyghurs' non-Chinese identity by banning various cultural and religious practices, later Maoists cracked down on religions twice as hard, this particularly triggered Muslims as you might expect, so the Chinese government got even more genocidal.

Missionaries from Portugal were sent all the time to preach. And Portugal is extremally "muslins gtfo" because reasons. There was no freedom of worship. What the fuck?!? First, China proper and West China are two significantly different geographical areas. I made that clear in my post.
Second, China and Han Chinese were in Xinjiang for 800 years before Islam was even founded.
Third, Turkic groups (like the Uyghurs) were the groups that spread Islam in West China. Furthermore, they ethnically cleansed the original inhabitants of those areas.
That is a verified fact. Dzungars are just one example.
