The flag of the Slovene nation was (and still is, but this is less known) a simple white-blue-red tricolour and there was a chance we could've used it for our country flag before Russia could use it. Unfortunately, we went with a very sad-looking coat of arms instead.
I like this alternative flag which features the Carniolan eagle. Some have expressed the opinion that this is not universal enough but the Duchy of Carniola was for a very long time the main region of Slovenia and Carniolan was synonymous with Slovene before nationalism.

Some pretty big variation right there. Some of my favorites are Nazi Germany's (all of those sharp, intimidating right angles against a bold, striking color scheme) and Macedonia's (that spiky, radiant sun). The Arab one with the lime green swords is opulent and sleek while at the same time intimidating.

There's the danger of massive clusterfucks and just plain ugly ones as well though. Russia tries to fit far too much onto it imo even by ornate flag emblem standards. The UK looks like something the electrician has painted on his van every time he rolls up to fix your wiring.
