I dont think caring about your offspring enters into it. Like most people think puppies are cute, but I know that many middle easterners see dogs as unclean and filthy things worthy only of revulsion. So I think there's a cultural thing to it, too

I wonder why so many of us find baby mammals cute in general, but find baby humans in specific to be kind of annoying and ugly. It seems to not happen for the most part with one's own kids, from what I have heard. Maybe we're hard-wired to not expend too many resources on other human children besides our own? Dunno.
