It's not hairsplitting when parts of a population are descended from a completely different ethnicity (east German population, much of Austrian population) yet the nation is proclaimed "pure" and then other ethnicities that are related to that assimilated part of ethnicity yet speak their original language are persecuted, as was the case of the Slavic people living subjugated under German rule in occupied territories (e.g. the Poles).
