>>

What was gandalf's religion op? Now I'm curious.
>>
>>2961222
There weren't any religions but the LOTR equivalent of god was Eru Ilúvatar
>>
>>2961245
>>2961222
I think Gandalf could be described as devotee of Eru Illuvatar.
>>
>>2961250
at what point do the valar count as gods, I would say that sauron/orcs are disciples of Melkor as opposed to devotee of eru
>>
Paganism would be debunked more easily and faster than Christianity, but they wouldn´t be nearly as butthurt about it, as many already saw the pagan myths as metaphors/allegories since ancient Greece. I guess this means that the world would have become secular faster.
>>
>>2961245
That's a depiction of Odin
>>
>>2961297
I assumed he was joking because the picture is literally titled odin
>>
>>2961168
Legit paganism could never have survived the age of discovery, it would be contradicted into oblivion.
>>
>>2961290
surely there would still be fanatics who believe in Ragnarok and the Apocalypse just as there are those now who believe in rapture
>>
>>2961307
haven't modern religions also been contradicted into oblivion. also Hinduism is still around despite its beliefs and gods
>>
>>2961168
You would be complaining about how your parents make you offer the blot and wishing that cool religions like Christianity were more popular.
>>
>>2961321
Abrahamic religions only started sounding silly to the average person once we started going into space. People still believe in Hinduism because education in 3rd world countries is very poor.
>>
>>2961361
People still practice Shinto and Sinitic Polytheism (even in the educated parts of China).

You might say "yeah, but that's just seguing into secularism" which is true but isn't what happened to Christianity.
>>
>>2961290
>debunked
>Implying there is a scientific way to disprove the existence of gods
>which is what would have to be done
>in order to 'debunk' any of the various forms of paganism
>>
>>2961290
>Paganism would be debunked more easily and faster than Christianity
No, it wouldn't. That's a ridiculous and untenable claim rooted in ignorance.
>>2961307
>Legit paganism could never have survived the age of discovery, it would be contradicted into oblivion.
Oh please, no more so than Christianity has been
>>
>>2961168
>cool religions
You don't have any sort of reference point by which to determine whether they were cool or not. There just isn't all that much we definitively know about pre-Christian European religions. We are pretty sure that there were several regional traditions and worldviews we call "paganism" but they didn't seem to have much organizational power or reach beyond specific regions. Even if they weren't "snuffed out," they would have faded away quite naturally (as many, many of these religions did).

The religions that survived are the truly cool ones anyway. They have deep roots, rich theologies, and longstanding, international oral and scholastic traditions.
>>
>>2961168
you'd have made the exact same thread
>>

>Paganism would be debunked more easily and faster than Christianity
Elaborate

You spend all that time telling us no one knows and then claim the ones that came after were better? Which bit isnt a guess?
>>
>>2961168
Serers
>>
>>2961386
It did happen to Christianity, at least in a lot of countries in Europe. Many people are what one could call "cultural Christians".
>>
>>2961307
>Shinto/Koshinto/Ainu Animism
>Hinduism
>Jainism
>Tengrism
>Native American Church
>Zoroastrianism
>Shamanism in every "primitive" area of the world from Siberia to the Congo
>>
>>2961307
Adding onto the list posted by >>2963121, old beliefs survived into the 20th century (possibly even to this day) in Europe, too.
>>
>>2961728
It wouldn't be debunked faster, but it would have lost popular support rather quickly.

Why?

Think it this way: if your life is shit, according to Hellenic paganism, it's because one of your ancestors fucked up spectacularly in a time almost forgotten by everyone. If you rebel and try to get better life condictions, your masters are right in killing you because you are going againstthe gods' will. When you die you become a crying shade going around a dank cave.

As for Norse paganism, the fact that you are supposed to die violently in order to get to heaven is probably not going to sit well with people once living condictions improve enough.

"Itinerant Christianity" said you actually we're right in rebelling to unjust masters, and your poorness made you more likely to get to paradise.
>>
>muh EPIC PAGANISM xDDDD
>modern religions r gay LMAO
>BASED POLYTHEISM
>pantheons are ftw! KEK LUL DESU SENPAI

kill yourself you middle school faggot
>>
>>2964131
everything you posted is correct
>>
>>2961168
In Asia they basically have similar paganism to ancient Europe to this day
>polytheism
>different gods answer for different areas of life
>pray and sacrifice to gods for things like success in business, marriage etc.
>vague commendments and theology
>there aren't really distinct religions, you can sacrifice to wathever god you feel like, the idea that there is only one true faith doesn't exist (just like how Romans started to worship Greek gods etc.)

Btw we now almost nothing about Germanic paganism. Even the earliest sources written about it are from Christians trying to guess what it was like when no one was practicing it anymore.
>>
>>2963121
>Hinduism
>Jainism
>Zoroastrianism
Isn't it a little a disingenuous to call those religions "pagan?"
