Do you think humanity could ever enter a period of indefinite stagnation? That is, a time period where the politics and culture of our society would prevent us from achieving sufficient technological advancement required for leaving earth and avoiding some extinction event. What could cause us to enter such a period?
Comfort, see ancient Egypt

You mean like, right now?

I had this thought too, but OP seems to be referring to technology rather than culture.

Thats an interesting distinction.
What would a very culturally advanded civilization look like as opposed to a very technologiclly advanced one?

People would be much happier even with less possessions.
A higher level of discourse would be common.
Education would be centered on a more humanist approach, rather than simply being preparation for a career.
People would save money for a while, and purchase quality, expensive products, rather than cheaper but worse ones.
These are really just the outcomes of an dvanced culture, rather than what it would look like though. The manner in which these things are achieved could vary in thousands of ways.

Strong recognition of human rights, a functional and efficient goverment, sustainable cultural norms and mores, low crime and respect of others, a reasonable Justice System that functions fairly, quickly, and rehabilitates people to become functional and well-behaved members of society (possibly using free range prison colonies with reintroduction upon rehabilitation?), a voluntary equitable distribution of resources, protection of the commons from destruction and unequitable exploitation, and probably a number of other things.
Surely others have different criteria. It seems impossible to achieve on a large scale unfortunately.

Much higher level of discourse, morality, empathy, satisfaction, etc.
