Stuff first, ideas second. Land, money, metals, food, oil, water, whatever. Then you rationalize it with freedom or equality or religion or something. Works for leaders, works for troops.

1. People go to war for different reasons.
2. Everyone following their own best interests is the make up for a dystopian novel, like really think about what you just said.
3. There is a lot to gain for "Johnnyboy", just take a moment to think about it. Independance, ousting a shit government, pride, safety for his family, ridding people he deems as evil, the idea of progress happening and being a part of it. The list goes on.

You're being reductionist OP. First of all, not all wars are wars of agression. Plenty of them happen when you're defending your home from other aggressors.

Secondly even Jhonnyboy doesn't go to war just because. They get paid to do so and even get paid when they aren't active. In older times, even invading armies had motives like getting some nice loot or pussy or land or whatever you can take from the defeated.
