Seconding, I'd like a nice general survey of Britain.

You want to know the birth of Britain?
You might like "The Birth of Britain" by big daddy Churchill himself

Same guy here
I have the Barnes N Noble copy in my car.
It starts with pre-Roman, then Roman, then the Anglos, then the Vikings, then Normans, then it begins talking about the Normandies, Plantegantes, Bloises, etc. Churchill makes sure to talk about the politics and the common folk, and not just focus on battles and kings.
Volume one of the Barnes n Noble version goes up until the 1400-1500s

Won't his text be dated by now - considering the amount of developments in archaeology

If you want to focus on the most pivotal times then the Heptarchy-The Anarchy, the wars of the three kingdoms-the glorious revolution and the Napoleonic wars-WW1 are the most important times.

does anyone know where I can download "How We'd Talk if the English Had Won in 1066"?

Laughable outdated like anything more than 30 years old, I'd imagine.
Daily reminder "British" history only starts in 1707.

Kinda hilarious. I'm British but the guys Bias is undeniable. However they give great insights into Churchill himself and what he thought and believed.
A good read though.
Peter Ackroyd's History of England seems a pretty good introduction. I've only read the first volume (Foundation), but I found it interesting and I liked the style.
