Evolved into modern warfare, quite a bit of shit happened during the period, a lot of evolution from Medieval tactics to modern ones, notably formations. Cannon and combined arms was also crucial (it's how France beat the tercio). France pretty much dominated Europe afterward

As far as the massacres go, a lot of political tension combined with religion as a spark. Culminated into a hell of a lot of bloodshed, but also saw populations move into cities and away from ravaged towns

Eh, any kind of campaign built on any ideology is very bad.

Hitler got 20 million people killed because of pseudoscience, and Stalin and Mao killed so many people because of an inherently flawed economic model.

It's a trait within humanity that needs to be examined in its purest form. Blaming it on any one of its manifestations only serves to blind you from any other form it may take.

It was a religious war within Germany between Catholic and Protestant kingdoms, but in reality it was about the (Catholic) Habsburg emperors trying to assert control over Germany. Catholic countries intervened on the Habsburg side, Protestant countries on the Protestant side. Except for France which although Catholic supported the Protestants in the name of Germanic freedoms, because they had an interest in preventing the formation of a united Germany under Habsburg rule.

The war saw the defeat of the Habsburgs, and the end of Spanish hegemony, replaced by two centuries of French hegemony.
