I have heard that all quiet on the Western front is a colourful factual report of WWI written by an author who certainly served for longer than a month on the front.

For British memoirs, try the famousn ones like Siegfried Sassoon’s so-called Sherston trilogy, three volumes of autobiographical accounts published between 1928 and 1936, and Richard Aldington’s Death of a Hero, from 1929.
