Anyone seen The Act of Killing?
From a purely utilitarian viewpoint, was what these men did justified? At a time when much of South East Asia was going communist, people being put to death by leftists, re-education camps for political dissidents and anyone deemed bourgeois or an intellectual, deadly famines, people without healthcare, killing fields....
Indonesia snuffed out the murderous ideology before it had a chance to take root, and today is much better for it. Twice as rich as Vietnam, three times as rich as Cambodia.
See also Chile under Pinochet. Surely the deaths of a few hundred people (leftists at that) is worth it to have the richest economy in South America? Isn't this like punching a fascist? Self defence before they have a chance to hurt you?

It's a muslim shithole. We shouldve never listened to the Americans.
They didnt just murder commies, they murdered Chinese, Whites, Halfies, Papuans and anything they considered non-malay.

This. After a point the Indonesian death squads just went full psychopath and murdered basically anyone they had even the slightest excuse to be able to. Commie or not. That was one of the points of the documentary.
Indonesia today is still a seriously troubled and backwards country even without Communism. Maybe if they had Communist reign it might at least have succeeded in eliminating Islamic Fundamentalism from the country.

>Surely the deaths of a few hundred people (leftists at that) is worth
As soon as you begin to think like this, you have set your feet on a very slippery slope.
>From a purely utilitarian viewpoint, was what these men did justified?
No.
