Thank you for knowing my national history better than I do. I was actually taught in school how, and in my own bought books on World War 2 how the German forces were actually greeted by local Dutch national socialist supporters. They welcomed them and gave them flowers, many saw them as a solution to the economic difficulties during the 1930s, as they had seen improvement in Germany. This was especially true in the eastern parts of the country, where ties with Germany were stronger. Furthermore, the Dutch population had one of the most active collaborations with the Germans, in no other occupied country were Jews given away in exchange for money or power more easily than in Holland and it had one of the most prominent Waffen SS volunteer divisions compared to the local population. The Germans were expected to bring order and economic prosperity.
Only when the German began their war against the Russians, the supplies and rations became tightened for the local population arose discontent amongst the general population which came with harsher martial law by the Nazi governor. This was followed by a famine due to complete cut off from the rest of Germany and sending supplies to relieve German forces, as Holland was one of the last nations to be liberated from the Germans. People were starving, had to resort to eating tulip bulbs and experienced years of oppression. Of course they were glad when the allies liberated them, however that does not mean that there was a large cooperation and excitement of German occupation at the start of the war. This is often ignored in favor of exaggerated “resistance actions”, where reading a non-German paper was something to boast about. You can call me whatever you like, I have lost my great-grandfather in a work camp and my grandmother has a burning hatred against the Germans. That does not diminish what I’ve written
