Are there big wealthy States who have some of their wealth redirected to poorer States? or does that not happen much because in first world countries there is no such need?

I know it happens in third world federal republics like Brasil and Argentina.

It does happen. In particular, California and the Northeast have much of their wealth siphoned to subsidize net drain states like Kentucky and West Virginia. It's a thing across all first world countries.
