Also the early Protestants, specifically the ones derived from Reformed theology or influenced by it, were initially opposed to proselytization/evangelization in contrast to Catholic missionaries in the Americas, Asia, and elsewhere (e.g. the Portuguese vs. the Dutch in Japan). They were concerned with a genuine conversion of faith as opposed to just nominally being joined to the church.

They probably didn't convert the natives immediately because they wanted to put them through Indian schools first so they could truly understand the meaning of the faith. It's sort of relative to the ideas of the designers of Eastern State Penitentiary in isolating inmates in cells with nothing but a Bible.
