The only thing wrong with the system as a system was that the outside world didn't like it, and that South Afrika never developed any viable means of nuclear exchange with the U.S.

It's mainly having a highly mobile male workforce; they go work in the mines, or harvesting, or driving trucks, or just going to cities looking for any kind of work, they have unprotected sex (and sex is very often exchanged by poor women/girls when they need money or food, without being a fulltime prostitute), and then they come back to their village and have unprotected sex with their wives. Mine workers and their communities were really the hardest hit.

The only stuff they needed that wasn't in SA proper was:
Rhodesian grain
Metals and raw nuclear material from central Africa
limited technological exchange and access to global monetary exchanges through Israel (just so that they didn't miss out on any global progress and get Opium War'd).

That's why the loss of their buffer states up North was a problem,
they could limp on without them just fine (by the 1970s they were actually manufacturing their petroleum oil from weeds and agricultural byproducts, thanks to some ex-nazi scientists who fled to Africa after WWII),
but they couldn't remain competitive with the outside world in a real way under sanctions; thus making them vulnerable to potential foreign military action.
