Is self-improvement and the optimisation of one's abilities an intrinsic right-wing quality, while blaming ones inadequacies and misfortune on the more successful more left-wing?

Right wing quality is to stay same, to conserve the status quo.
Self-improvement and optimization are progress, which is left-wing quality.

The contemporary "status quo" refers to the political structure and perhaps conserving the cultural ethnicity of a state. In terms of individual philosophies, it is vastly different.
Take the example of Black Lives Matter, a far-left political lobby group aiming to receive reparations from slavery, as well as enforced greater participation by blacks in higher institutions. The small number of right-wing blacks however, are more inclined to keep their head down, grit their teeth, and not blame their predicament on their background. This dynamic is very similar to Aborignals in Australia.

This is partially correct. Yes, conservative is to maintain status quo, and yes, liberal is to make progress, however whether or not that progress is beneficial or not (or whether or not we should maintain the status quo) is the debatable part. You said "self improvement and optimization" which isn't necessarily always true.
Take open borders for example. Yeah, it's progressive as we live in a rationalistic society, but it would be fucking disastrous.
Karl Marx's statement "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need" demonstrates a common left-wing philosophy; pigeon holing an individual's ability and now allowing their talents to flourish. Their emphasis on class warfare on the educated "bourgeoisie" shows a clear inclination to deny the prosperity to those who have sought to improve their individual circumstances.
