How did the Italian Navy fare against the British Navy or any Allied navy during WW2? What was their main naval doctrine and how effective was it?

>How did the Italian Navy fare against the British Navy or any Allied navy during WW2?
considering them being >italy pretty good

early war they could land a hit as good as the RN at day, but as the war progressed and the RN got RADAR they lost their edge and also then there's Taranto

>What was their main naval doctrine and how effective was it?
to protect the convoys supplying north Africa

But how effective was it? And how much did the Italian Navy hurt the British Navy?
>>
>whole fleet in Mediterranean
>Brits control Gibraltar, Malta, and Suez

Not bad at first:

But then the Italian got completely BTFO at Cape Matapan:

The Italians did fairly well in the Mediterranean. They ran out of oil though and had to remain in port the rest of the war.

>By the time of the September 1943 Armistice between Italy and the Allies, Italian ships and aircraft had sunk Allied surface warships totaling 145,800 tons, while the Germans had sunk 169,700 tons, for a total of 315,500 tons. In total the Allies lost 76 warships and 46 submarines. In return the Allies sank 83 Italian warships totaling 195,100 tons (161,200 by the Commonwealth and 33,900 by the Americans) and 83 submarines.[1] German losses in the Med from the start of the campaign to the end were 68 submarines.[2]

They lost.

Apart from the shortage of oil to supply their ships, were there any other factors that crippled their operational capabilities?

The eternal problem of going up against the British navy in either world war is that they have so many damn ships that they can win just by attrition.
