What's the difference between colonialism and conquest?
Example: Why isn't the Norman conquest of England considered colonialism?
>invasion of a land by foreigners on flimsy pretexts
>ruled by the invaders from afar
>invaders suppress the local culture
>they establish their foreign language as the official tongue
>invaders kill or exile the native elites and take their land
>invaders enslave the local common folk (as serfs) and force them to work the land for the economic benefit of themselves
>foreigners immigrate en masse to the new land to populate it
colonialism is a gradual takeover mostly by taking over the country's economic institutions
conquest is a more direct takeover. Army A occupies Country B after wiping out Army B, conquest
so I guess the answer is subtly
Normans eventually became English. WASP's in North America did not mingle with Cherokee or Sioux people.

So you conquer someone only if your culture stops existing?

>ruled by the invaders from afar
But he set up his court in London?

Colonialism, like the British occupation of Africa, follows mercantilism. Conquests, like Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great, is essentially either taking over empires or defeating armies of empires.

>Normans eventually became English.
Or did the English eventually become Norman?
>WASP's in North America did not mingle with Cherokee or Sioux people.
I don't know. Most Americans have some native blood. Most US. states have native names.

There were colonies in the ancient world. You mean the Colonial Era followed mercantilism.
>>2857884
>Or did the English eventually become Norman?
No, the french language, spoken by the norman nobility after the conquest was overtaken by the english language again after three centuries.
>>2857889
Colonialism =/= colonies

What's the difference between colonialisation and conquest?

>No, the french language, spoken by the norman nobility after the conquest was overtaken by the english language again after three centuries.
Not really. Pre-Norman English is unintelligible to modern speakers. Modern English is a hybrid.
>>2857790
Colonialism is a form of conquest. The primary difference is that a colony is not considered to be a part of the country's core territory and is instead a periphery. Thus colonialism is specifically the addition of territory to the country's periphery whereas conquest is just the addition of territory by force. So to effectively answer your question: squares and rectangles.

Mostly because we don't piss and moan and whine about it

>Mostly because we don't piss and moan and whine about it
Also it was centuries ago while for colonialism it hasn't been a single century :^)

Natives are small as fuck in optional, heavily mixed either Native/Native (indigenous ethnic groups decreased so much that they had to combine with others to retain numbers) or Native/anything. Very little effect on culture, barely have an type of impact in America of anytype, minority of minorities.

Conquest is adopting a kid or taking your wife's kid as your own.
Colonization is guardianship or foster kid.
