Should these two be held up as giants of Western intellect? It seems they held the West in an arrested development that wasn't broken until the time of Descartes/

Probably a lack of emotions within the book. For all we know Aristotle could have been autistic and not really understand emotions all that well. Could have decided they were a burden.
