To be fair, the US government made a conscious decision to encourage this kind of thinking. The cold war put the US in kind of an awkward place because it put them heavily at odds with the Soviet Union, who had briefly been considered allies during WW2. In particular, the US wanted to recreate the German army as a bulwark against soviet aggression while at the same time making sure that they didn't retro-actively justify Hitler in any way. The solution? "Clean Wehrmacht." The decision was made to intentionally downplay war crimes committed by the Wehrmacht during the war. In this new narrative, the average Wehrmacht soldier was simply a patriotic individual fighting to defend his country, whereas all the nasty genocide stuff was completely the fault of the SS and Hitler with the Wehrmacht having no knowledge (and thus no responsibility) of such things. Many Wehrmacht commanders who had been convicted of war crimes at Nuremberg where pardoned so that they could help rebuild the German army as a fighting force.

While the National Socialists certainly had other plans regarding the territory of Russia, ultimately they invaded the USSR because the two ideologies simply could not exist togheter and conflict between the two was inevitable.

Many men from different nations joined the SS just so they could fight communism so essentially that makes the SS an anti-communist european force even though in the end there was more to Nazism and the SS than just anti-communism.

Czchoslovakia (Protectorate) had one SS unit, they wanted to create whole division, but they ended up with 80 soldiers, out of them 1 was spy. Their only military action was surrendering to Revolutionary Guards and getting GULAG´D for 10 to 25 years.
