My dad has/had a sword that his dad gave to him that was given to him by his dad etc. Basically it's a really old, heavy, super cool sword that has our family crest thingie on it. It's really cool, I think my gran stole it from my dad though

Coat of Arms refers to the actual coat which has stitched onto it, the individual's Arms.

The correct term is 'Heraldic Achievement'.

The Escutcheon (Shield) contains within it the 'Arms'.

STOP making this mistake.

I don't but my brother in law is descended from the McSweeney Gallowglass clan. They have their own tartan and an old castle up in Donegal. His great-grandfather was the only man from Donegal to come down to Dublin for the 1916 Rising and he still has his officer's sabre to this day.

Having a clan badge is completely dissimilar to a coat of arms. That is not a coat of arms and most Scotch people can find a clan badge corresponding to their surname. Coat of Arms are inherited via patrilineal descent only and are granted by the Lord Lyon of Arms.
