How much credence is there to the theory that China caused the fall of Rome, by smashing the Xiongnu so hard that some of them moved West, became the Huns, and drove millions of Goths into Roman territory where they sacked the western empire?
>>
The Huns aren't what really ended the Roman Empire, but more the straw that broke the camel's back.

What really killed Rome was internal struggles and internal instability, which all started with the Antoine plague in the second century. What would be interesting would be if that plague was brought westward by Northern Xiongnu as they migrated.

There's multiple answers to your question.
1) We have no idea who the Huns (the main tribe, not the confederacy they led) were ethnically speaking save for one line by a Roman historian.
2) However Xiongnus defeat definitely blunted any Steppenig (slant-eyed version) inclination to migrate Eastwards. Thereby they started encroaching on Iranic Steppenigs westward. But that was in the 200s BCs. The Huns were in 300s AD. Related to that:
3) The Huns seem to be part of a massive upheaval in Central Asia blamed on overpopulation of Central Asia, leading to the tribes there to strike out *in all directions.* At the same time Rome was having problems with the Huns, Sima Jin China was having trouble with a wide variety of Steppeniggers invading Northern China.

tl;dr Xiongnu defeat definitely led to Iranic Steppe Nomads getting SLANTED. But if they are the same as the Huns, is another issue.

Dates are a little off for that.

The accepted date for the end of the Han-Xiongnu wars is 89 AD.

The Huns showed in earnest in the West at around 375 AD, although the effects of their presence were felt earlier. That's roughly a 300 year delay instead of 500.

The fall of the Roman Empire can be attributed to the fact that a succession system was never formalized, which caused countless civil wars as myriads of pretenders vied for the Imperial office every time an Emperor died or was seen as too weak.

Oops, yes I am.

However, it seems the main empire was gone before the BCs was over and the AD bits of the Wars are just Han putting down splinters of it.

Whoever the Huns were, we have no idea what they looked like. Jordanes writing a couple of centuries after the initial hun invasion gives us this:
>They made their foes flee in horror because their swarthy aspect was fearful, and they had, if I may call it so, a sort of shapeless lump, not a head, with pin-holes rather than eyes. Their hardihood is evident in their wild appearance, and they are beings who are cruel to their children on the very day they are born. For they cut the cheeks of the males with a sword, so that before they receive the nourishment of milk they must learn to endure wounds. Hence they grow old beardless and their young men are without comeliness, because a face furrowed by the sword spoils by its scars the natural beauty of a beard. They are short in stature, quick in bodily movement, alert horsemen, broad shouldered, ready in the use of bow and arrow, and have firm-set necks which are ever erect in pride. Though they live in the form of men, they have the cruelty of wild beasts.

Most cetrainly they are a confederacy of various steppenig peoples and even later on German tribes, so yes there was some mixing.

>I also have another question about mughals , where they steppe nomadic people who looked asian and then mixed with persians and then got browned?
The Mughals weren't a race. The founders of Mughal India were simply the liegemen of Babur, who was a lord of a small Ferghana valley fief descended of the Timurid dynasty from his dad's side and the Chaghatai Khans from his mums. Ethnically, he was Turco-Mongol, but culturally they were Persianized steppenigs blabbering in Persian. Then Uzbeks ousted him from his comfy fief and Babur became a landless mercenary lord until he got tired of it and invaded India, founding a massive empire.

His followers were a mixed bunch consisting of Turkics, Mongols, Turco-Mongols, Iranics, some Arabs, Afghani peoples, and whoever it is that called him "lord."

>a succession system was never formalized
It was supposed to pass from father to son and be ratified by the Senate. The soldiers just kept declaring new Augustus at the drop of a hat.

That was the case, but the important thing to note is that the treaty of subjugation that turned the southern Xiongnu into a Han tributary was in 89 AD.

If the "Xiongnu > Hun" theory is correct, this would be the moment that prompted the Northern Xiongnu to migrate away from the Han dynasty. Then over the next 300 years, they would katamari the various Turkic/Iranian/Gothic peoples into an empire-ending rapetrain westward.

If the theory is not correct, the Xiongnu probably just moved somewhat westward into central asia, and melded into the general population until another factor caused all of the steppe nomads to start migrating in around 300 AD.

So why the name?
>>
>>2812947
You how people just call a foreign group by a blanket name and then fuck off? Yes, that was what happened with Babur.

Babur named his dynasty "Timurid," after his house. Later on the Dynasty called itself "Gurkani." But to the native Indians, every horse riding, bow twanging, slant-eyed cunt was a Mongol to them, hence Mughal.

Really, Babur was just a guy with a Mount & Blade Party running around Central Asia/Afghanistan until he decided that he needed a cushy retirement and felt India was the safest place he could put down roots on. He wasn't leading some tribe or confederacy around.

Could it realistically take 300 years for the Xiongnu to get from China to Rome?
>>

Generally if you're a Nomad, you're not exactly moving with a fixed destination at mind. You're moving for the sake of your livelihood. So you coul expect like Generations to loiter in a given area or so before moving on.
